DVIDS – News – Upgraded Apache helicopters arrive in Korea

The 4th Battalion (Attack), 2nd Aviation Regiment (4-2 AB) at Camp Humphreys, South Korea, is equipped with the newest AH-64 Version 6 (V6) helicopter. This is the first OCONUS unit to receive the V6 aircraft.

Commissioning began in November and the unit has since received 12 of the 24 devices.

Apache version 6 of the AH-64E model is the last planned upgrade to the aircraft, replacing the AH-64D Apache attack helicopters. The V6 enhances Apache’s core mission: seek and destroy. They include:

• An improved cockpit map display that will allow pilots to use digital map images to view terrain and other topographic features, increasing pilot situational awareness.

• Multiple upgrades to the modernized Target Acquisition Designation Sight / Pilot Night Vision System (MTADS / PNVS) deliver improved resolution and acuity allowing pilots to grasp targets more clearly at longer distances over their display screens.

• A GEN3 daytime sensor assembly (GEN3 DSA), which doubles the sensor’s field of view and increases resolution while adding color images to improve detection and identification of targets.

• 16 communications link, which allows Apache to “switch network connections on-site and merge different networks for an operational picture”, which improves real-time situational awareness in the aircraft cockpit.

• Manned-Unmanned Teaming E eXpanded (MUMT-X) software designed to allow Apache pilots to directly control other Army unmanned aerial systems and receive UAS video in the cockpit while directing their flight path and controlling their sensors.

Whether a new pilot or a seasoned pilot, operating the AH-64E V6 requires comprehensive mission equipment and flight training. The New Equipment Training (NET) team in the Apache Project Office Aviation Program Executive Office provides essential instruction to ensure operators are ready to operate safely and take full advantage of the many upgrades available. the V6 aircraft. The 4-2 AB pilot training started in September 2021 and continues until September 2022; Maintenance training started in August and ends in July 2022.

The Apache NET team uses a combination of classroom training, Longbow Crew Training (LCT) sessions, and training flights to familiarize pilots with the enhanced version. Operator training consists of four different course types: Aircraft Series Transition Course (ASTC), Aircraft Version Upgrade Training (Differences), Maintenance Test Series Transition Course Pilot (MTP) and MTP version upgrade training.

More powerful sensors, better situational awareness, and better information flow – all of these improvements have made the new iteration of Apache much more versatile and deadly. “The implementation and use of these aircraft will have a long-lasting and far-reaching impact on our mission to support and defend the Republic of Korea and ‘fight tonight’,” Iuchs said.

The aircraft’s entry into service is expected to be completed in February 2022.
