Intel and Microsoft Fix Majority of Games Affected by 12th Gen Alder Lake DRM Issue on Windows 11

A month later, Microsoft and Intel fixed DRM issues seen on Windows 11 with Alder Lake 12th generation processors for the majority of games. Right now, only three games are still affected by the issue, which is still a huge improvement over the 51 titles that had issues in Windows 11.

The issue occurred when Digital Rights Management (DRM) software in a line of games incorrectly identified the hybrid design on Intel Alder Lake processors as two separate PCs. The Intel Alder Lake processor line comes with two distinct core architectures, performance cores (P-Core) powered by the Golden Cove architecture and efficiency cores (E-Core) powered by the Gracemont architecture. DRM treats these two separate core packages as two different PCs while they are part of the same chip.

Earlier this month, over 50 titles were affected by the DRM issue on Intel Alder Lake processors and Windows 11 operating system. Now there are only three titles that include Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Fernbus Simulator and Maden 22.

Intel says the remedy for the problem for these games is the scroll lock fix which can be done by enabling Legacy Game Compatibility Mode from your motherboard BIOS. While running said games, you can press scroll lock to park electronic cores on Intel Alder Lake Desktop processors to get rid of DRM issues.

Some motherboard manufacturers such as MSI and Gigabyte have made this even easier with software tools with which you don’t need to access the BIOS. All you need to do is select a button in the tool that works on both Windows 11 and Windows 10 operating systems and you will activate compatibility mode.

MSI released DRM Access Tool to provide an alternative way to improve the problem previously observed by Intel, and provide gamers with a workaround to the affected game titles. Updating the BIOS is not a requirement for launch DRM Access Tool, which just makes sure that E-core isn’t the bottleneck when running the game.

1. Before launching the game, open the tool and press Start
2. Launch the game and you should not experience any DRM related issues.

If you are having DRM issues on Windows 11 with some games, you are advised to follow both methods depending on your motherboard (DRM Fix Tool & BIOS Feature).
