On Monday, “The Daily Show” took a special look at the celebration in honor of Christopher Columbus and suggested replacing it with one celebrating an Italian-American who has nothing to do with the man who started the event. Native American genocide: Dr. Anthony Fauci.
Columbus Day, celebrated every October 12 since 1934, was created to honor the contributions of Italian Americans. But the holiday has become increasingly controversial due to increased awareness of Columbus’ role in the Native American genocide as well as the many horrific crimes against humanity that he not only committed but admitted. For example, Columbus handed From Caribbean women to crew members to be raped; openly boasted of how easy it would be to enslave the Caribbean people; personally enslaved more than a thousand people; forced the natives to mine for gold or to comply; and perhaps the most horrible of all, he literally sold children as young as 9 into sex slavery. In other words, a horrible person.
But of course, as Noah noted on Monday, the Italian-American experience is certainly worth celebrating in America, noting that “there was a time when Italian-Americans were gravely oppressed in America, and they did. of Christopher Columbus a model because he put them at the center of American history.
“But times have changed,” Noah continued, “and more and more people find it difficult to celebrate Christopher Columbus knowing all the bad things he did.”
But the good news, Noah said, is that “Italian Americans have gone from being the persecuted to being one of the most powerful politicians, artists and medical school corpses in the country,” the latter being a dig at former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani. .
Which brings us to Fauci. “So you could replace Columbus with any number of deserving Italians. I mean, just off the top of my head, what if we replaced Columbus with Dr Anthony Fauci? Said Noah. “He’s an Italian-American hero, he’s loved and respected by everyone, or at least almost everyone” – at that point a photo of Trump appeared on the screen – “and he try to fight disease, instead of spreading it across the continent. “
But the best part, according to Noah? “Dr. Fauci is a little guy so you save on marble costs.
