Windows 10 crashes on shutdown and I lost embedded audio

Hi guys,

So I’m just stuck with what happened to my computer recently. Recently two things happened around the same time, so I can’t tell you which one was the culprit: I plugged in an external hard drive which just shocked/zapped me and then wouldn’t be recognized by the pc (I’m sure it – it’s now being sent for RMA repair).

At the same time, my computer was downloading and applying the recent April update. Updates have messed up my audio before so my first thought was updates. But this time, my problem seemed more serious.

The troubleshooting I’ve done so far is: Run a bootable CD to test audio. Audio was still not working or detected in the live environment. Since I make music in my spare time, I have an audio interface here and plugged it in. I now have sound through that, at least. But my built-in audio just doesn’t work and is not recognized in device manager. There is an exclamation mark next to High Definition Audio Device under Device Manager that says: This device cannot start. (Code 10) — see picture

I have also tried reinstalling Realtek with no success. My pc keeps crashing on shutdown. I tried disabling fast shutdown according to an article I read (did not solve my problem).

My google searches revealed that there were one or two others with my exact problem in the past, but they received no response and did not follow up on it. While I can detail what happened to me in my particular case and the things I did to get to the bottom of it, I think I will help others who run into this issue.

I’m writing here in the hope that someone has encountered this problem before and can help me with the remaining troubleshooting steps before I look to buy a new motherboard.

Thanks very much!
